Identity – What is it?
Posted January 10, 2010
on:Although the discussion between nature and nurture continues, it is clear it is some combination of the two. This creates a paradox for those who would say that a person’s DNA determines who they are and should be a useful way to determine identity. The legal system – and a few television shows – have accepted DNA evidence for identity and paternity but many have continued to question if that is accurate. Some researchers are looking at this question critically to determine how this information can properly be used and the most recent are asking for access to CODIS – the US national DNA database (see Science 18 December 2009 326(5960):1631 – 1632).
If your identity is tied into your DNA, should they be allowed access to such specific data about individuals?
Is this the only way to “prove” that many people have the same DNA? Is this necessary to demonstrate DNA can’t be used to determine identity beyond a reasonable doubt?
Is there another way to determine identity? What comprises identity?
Point for thought: If two individuals have the identical DNA, we say they are “identical twins”. In this case, the DNA alone is not sufficient to determine the difference between the individuals – more information recording their interaction with the world is required! In the case of identical twins, it is necessary to have a timestamp for their birth.
